Socially responsible & ethically certified.

We choose to knit with one of the last remaining knitting factories in Melbourne, which is certified by ECA (Ethical Clothing Australia).

We are now working across The Tasman too with our factory in Auckland, New Zealand. With decades of experience, they live up to our high standards of quality and share our ethical values. Just like our Melbourne factory, they also ensure their team is looked after by providing safe working conditions and fair pay for all of their workers.

In both factories our pieces are designed to be knitted all in one piece on Japanese knitting machines. This innovative technology combined with the finesse of hand-finishing creates seamless knits with minimal waste.

Certified sustainable yarns

We trace the supply chain of every knit carefully, choosing to work with premium yarns from around the world that carry a wide range of certifications;

RWS (Responsible Wool Standard)
RAS (Responsible Alpaca Standard)
RMS (Responsible Mohair Standard)
NZ ZQ Merino certification
BCI (Better Cotton Initiative)
OEKOTEX® Standard 100
Bluesign® .

We focus on natural fibres like merino wool, alpaca, possum, cotton, silk and mohair that are breathable while you own them, and then naturally break down afterwards.

Some fibres, like mohair and alpaca, do benefit from a small amount of polyester for longevity and to help them keep their shape, so we use this fibre thoughtfully and sparingly.

As we grow we are striving to increase the sustainability of our supply chain. We are working to decrease the carbon footprint of our supply chain by working increasingly with some of the last local spinners remaining in Australia and New Zealand.

Throughout our supply chain from fibre to to yarn to jumper, the need for packaging is eliminated if possible. Any necesary packaging is reused and recycled as often as possible within the Francie studio, and then can be recycled or home-composted when it reaches you.

Sustainable by design

As well as producing sustainably, each Francie knit is carefully designed:

  • Timeless Design:
Made to last in quality, and aesthetically. The Francie collection of knitwear is an evolving range of modern classics.

  • Sizing Approached Differently:
Deceptively simple designs fit beautifully on many different body shapes, and move with you if your body changes over time.

  • Trans-Seasonal:
Natural fibres in relaxed silhouettes are perfect for layering up in winter, or as a light layer in the warmer months.

  • Less is More:
To minimise our impact on the planet we produce in limited quantities and rarely have sales.
